What are building trades?

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is the leading form of construction craft training. It is the system that unions use to train new members to join the building trades. The apprenticeship system is open to all. Apprentices take classes and get paid on-the-job training.


Do apprentices pay for the classes they take?

No. Instead, apprentices are paid full wages and benefits while they receive on-the-job training and take classes.


Is there more than one apprenticeship program?

Yes, there are dozens of apprenticeship programs in Southern California.


How do I choose an apprenticeship program?

First, decide which trade interests you most. The Building Trades Council includes 15 different trades to choose from. Each trade arranges its own apprenticeship program. Learn about the trades.
